Learn Why Today's Threats Require a lot More Than a Firewall

Attend this Webinar on 4/28/05 10am and receive a FREE 32mb Pen Drive
Did you know that 60 new computer viruses are identified each week?  Or, that blended threats like Blaster can circle the world in less than three hours?  The best way to manage an outbreak is to prevent it from occurring in the first place.  Symantec Gateway Security 5400 Series enables you to proactively protect your network, repelling threats before information and systems are put at risk, before your organization's reputation and relationships can be compromised.

Q&A with an Engineer in the Field

A Monthly Section Featuring Hi-Link Senior Engineer Phil Chen
Q: In order to reduce cost, we are starting to migrate our frame-relay Wide Area Network to use VPN connections. We currently
use ISDN lines to backup our frame-relay lines automatically. After migrating to VPN connections, we cannot find ways to backup the VPN links the way we backup our frame-relay network now. Any suggestions?

A: The shortcoming of replacing legacy-leased lines with VPN connections is its inability to integrate seamlessly into an
existing Wide Area Network. This may not be a huge problem with only a few VPN connections, but the problem grows exponentially
as you add more VPN connections. If it is a large network, many customers opt to use a managed VPN provider like MCI's
Private IP services, or PIP. PIP allows their customers to connect their network just like legacy leased line connections without having to worry about the complexity of VPN configuration. Better yet, if you already have a Cisco network, you can deploy Cisco GRE, or Generic Routing Encapsulation protocol, over IPSEC. GRE/IPSEC VPNs allow you to treat a VPN connection just like a leased line. You can continue to use ISDN backup the same way as they were like your frame-relay
network. You can even route IPX or Appletalk over the GRE/IPSEC interfaces if you wish.
