A Monthly Section
Featuring Hi-Link Senior Engineer Phil
Chen Q: Our company LAN has
multiple VLANs routed by a core layer-3 switch. We are
thinking of deploying a company-wide wireless network. How do
I extend our current VLAN infrastructure into the wireless
network?
A: This requires wireless access point that
supports VLANs and multiple SSIDs. There are at least two
methods to accomplish your goal. The first method is to tie
different SSIDs to different VLANs, so a user is assigned to
his VLAN by the SSID used. The number of VLANs supported is
limited by number of SSIDs supported on the wireless access
point. The second method is much more scalable by using the
EAP Radius attributes which can dynamically assign a user into
his assigned VLAN based on user groups. The detail of this
implementation is beyond the scope of this article. Please
contact me if you want to know more about this.
Q:
We are migrating our accounting software to a high-end
enterprise package. We did some initial testing on a very
high-end server by installing the database back-end, web
application front-end, and the reporting module on the same
server. The software vendor is recommending putting the three
components on three separate servers. We tested this setup and
found it to be slower than when everything was installed under
one server. The size of our company is relatively small and it
will be static for the foreseeable future. Should we stay with
the single server approach?
A: What you described is a
classic three tier application design. I have seen companies
putting all three tiers on a single server to save money and
time initially, but almost always regretted that decision
later on. The benefit of separating the three tiers is
scalability, but not necessarily in terms of scaling to
support more users. Separating the three components allows you
to upgrade, troubleshoot, and mange them much better and
easier. Just imaging a required patching of the web front-end,
can and most often will cause problems with the database
component. It is much easier to perform maintenance and
perform troubleshooting if they are installed on separate
servers.
