The 25-foot mobile demonstration van is equipped with
the latest networking technologies featuring hands on demo's
illustrating technology solutions in four key areas: IP
communications, network security, network foundation
solutions, and wireless solutions. Once on-board the
Cisco Network on Wheels visitors experienced interactive
demonstrations of technology solutions designed to enhance a
company's competitive edge, maximize productivity, reduce
costs, and ultimately drive growth. The Network on Wheels
mobile Showcase Van made a rare Stamford appearance on May
13th 2005 at The Stamford Marriott.
We would also like
to congratulate Gerald Gugert of Brunschwig & Fils for
winning the Apple iPod Shuffle.

A Monthly Section
Featuring Hi-Link Senior Engineer Phil
Chen Q: What is the best way to
provide guest wireless access with fair amount of security and
minimum administrative overhead?
A: There are products
used in hotspots at hotels and internet cafes that will give
you authentication security, control and almost transparent
access. Authentication is done through SSL to protect
eavesdropping of username and password. However, most of the
actual wireless traffic is not encrypted other than the
initial login. There are simple, easy to follow enrollment
instruction to provide users with different level of accesses
for better control and accounting. These devices also provide
proxy service to guest wireless laptops so they can access the
wireless network regardless of their local ip configuration.
They can simply turn on their laptops, open their web browser
to answer a few simple questions. They will be able to access
your wireless network with the level of access designated by
the administrator.
Q: We have been
systematically upgrading our data network equipment to support
VoIP (Voice Over IP). Our data network consists of private
lines and VPNs. With our existing Digital PBX not capable of
supporting VoIP, can we take advantage of our infrastructure
now for inter-office voice calls using VoIP for
toll-by-passing?
A: The answer is yes. There are two
types of VoIP implementation we are talking about here: VoIP
transport and VoIP Termination. VoIP transport is just that,
your data network acts as a transport for your voice traffic.
This requires your voice call to terminate elsewhere such as
your IP PBX and etc.. With VoIP terminating on your routers,
there are quick and dirty ways to take advantage VoIP
capability in your network now. You can actually have phone
calls terminate at your router with, for example, FXS (Foreign
eXchange Station) ports without any other special equipment.
You can simply plug in an analog telephone and make voice
calls to anywhere on your data network with the similar setup.
When you are ready for a full scale IP telephony deployment,
you can simply integrate this into your IP telephony
design.
