Wireless Security Concerns

Wireless security concerns will grow as companies begin to use wireless LANs to support video and voice applications, municipalities launch outdoor wireless mesh networks, and mobile employees and teleworkers take advantage of broadband wireless connections.

Sometimes technology can be too easy. One of the biggest wireless-security problems for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), according to security consultants, happens when an employee buys a cheap retail wireless access point, plugs it into an Ethernet jack on the network, and instantly establishes a wireless local-area network (LAN).

Unfortunately for the company, this "rogue" access point won't be secure because anyone can use it. And any hacker can use a "sniffer" device to tap the radio frequency and read data that is being transmitted via the access point.

These scenarios are big concerns for SMBs. Fortunately, advances in network security, such as integrated systems for wired and wireless networks, increase protection while concurrently making wireless LAN deployment and management more cost-effective.

Tech Watch: Secure ADSL; Access Devices; Tablet PC

Small and midsize businesses are rapidly adopting asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL) as a cost-effective connectivity option. This connection technology comes with some unique operating and security requirements that differ from standard ISDN and T-1 connections. Fortinet's FortiGate-60ADSL, FortiWiFi-60A and FortiWiFi-60AM provide ADSL with the same security functionality and protection of its standard unified threat-management appliances. These standard features include ASIC-based accelerated processing, stateful-inspection firewall, antivirus, IPSec and SSL VPN, IPS, Web filtering, traffic shaping, antispam and antispyware. The 60ADSL features dual WAN support for redundant connectivity and an integrated four-port switch, which extends its power by providing networking capabilities. The WiFi-60A and WiFi-60AM are designed specifically for wireless implementations and support the full range of wireless standards (802.11a/b/g).
